AI-generated images claiming to depict Venezuela's president under arrest after his capture by the United States have amassed tens of millions of impressions on social media.

How AI Images of the President Emerged Soon After

Initial fake AI image seemingly displaying him led off a plane surfaced shortly after. The graphic was absent from any verified US channels; it was instead uploaded on the platform X by an profile purporting to be an “enthusiast of AI-generated art”.

We’ve checked Google’s SynthID, confirming the image was generated or edited with Google AI.

Additional synthetic visuals were disseminated in the subsequent period, purporting to present different views of the leader under guard. Discernible logos on these images indicate they were posted by an Instagram profile called ultravfx.

SynthID indicates the further pictures were likewise generated or edited AI technology.

Real Photo Posted but Fabrications Persisted

The former US president released the first real photo of Maduro restrained aboard the USS Iwo Jima on that morning. However, despite the authentic image was published, AI-generated images continued to spread but were modified to show the grey athletic wear seen on Maduro.
