Governor Noem Inspects Oregon Immigration and Customs Enforcement Facility Alongside Right-Wing Figures
The South Dakota governor, currently serving as the homeland security secretary, inspected the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) location in Portland, Oregon on this week. During her visit, she observed a limited protest outside, which differs significantly to the fiery "blockade" alleged by the former president.
Accompanied by MAGA Personalities
Noem was escorted by a trio of MAGA-aligned personalities who were driven from the airport to the facility in her security detail. The Department of Homeland Security has published escalating online posts depicting federal agents performing enforcement operations and firing crowd control measures at crowds.
Protest Scene
Officers secured the area outside the ICE office in the Portland's waterfront district before the governor's appearance. Several individuals, among them one wearing a costume of a fowl and another as a shark, were kept at a distance.
A song played loudly from a protest encampment down the street, with lyrics referencing the former president and Epstein files. One protester called out to a federal recorder documenting from the roof, challenging whether the homeland security had been dubbed the "ministry of propaganda".
Press Coverage
Journalists from independent media organizations were also kept at the barrier outside, while the MAGA-aligned figures in Noemâs entourageâBenny Johnson, Nick Sortor, and David Mediaâposted social media updates of the governor participating in federal officers in religious observance inside, offering a motivational speech, and advising a individual of the militia to "Prepare".
Background Developments
The secretary has supported the former president's assertions that the group of demonstratorsâwho have gathered in their dozens outside the site since the summer, including one in an inflatable frog costumeâare "extremists" who have placed the building "in a state of siege", making the sending of government forces critical.
Yet, on Saturday, a federal judge in Portland blocked Trumpâs effort to federalize Oregonâs National Guard, stating that the his allegations that the mostly calm city was "burning to the ground" were "untethered to the facts".
A day later, the same judge, the magistrateâwho was appointed to the court by the former presidentâextended the decision to block National Guard troops from any jurisdiction from being used in the city. The judge ruled after he reacted to her initial ruling by trying to send members of the California's guard to the state.
Escalating Tensions
Following the former president focused on the modest but continuous gathering outside the office and made false claims that Portland is "battle-scarred", a growing number of his adherents, including conservative personalities, have appeared to challenge the individuals.
Several of these clashes have resulted in fights and brawls, prompting arrests by the local law enforcement. Nick Sortor was one of those detained after he attempted to push through a protest encampment on a pavement near the office and was involved in a scuffle over an U.S. flag. The influencer had before removed the flag from a individual who was destroying it.
Legal accusations against Sortor were later dropped after an protest in partisan press prompted the chief of the civil rights division of the DOJ, the division head, to warn of a probe of the law enforcement agency over alleged partisan treatment.
Two individuals Sortor was involved in an altercation with still face charges.
Government Statements
On Sunday, Governor Tina Kotek, she, accused federal officers in the site of trying to irritate the crowds by using disproportionate amounts of crowd control agents in a residential neighborhood and bringing in right-wing personalities to film the protesters from the top of the building. "Their actions are meant to provoke," the governor stated.
Several of those conservative influencers were referred to in a police report last month as "anti-protest individuals" who "constantly return and provoke the protesters until they are assaulted or exposed to irritants" and resist "frequent warnings from police to keep clear of" the group.
Influencer Activities
A conservative personality, a former journalist who transitioned as a partisan figure after being let go from a media outlet for ethical violations, published footage of Noem viewing from the top of the ICE facility at the handful of individuals below, including Jack Dickinson who dons a chicken costume to mock Trump. Johnson captioned the clip of the secretary observing the calm environment below: "DHS Secretary Kristi Noem stares down army of Antifa and a guy in a chicken suit".
Regardless of the contrast between the assertions from the former president and the secretary that this site is "encircled" from "radicals" and visible proof of a handful of demonstrators in harmless costumes, the personalities with the secretary continued to describe the protesters as dangerous radicals.
Meeting with Police Chief
While in Portland, Governor Noem also engaged with the Portland police chief, the chief, who has been depicted as "woke" in conservative media for authorizing his law enforcement to arrest the influencer. In a digital announcement on the meeting, Johnson stated that the chief had "sided with violent ANTIFA militants attacking journalists and officers outside ICE facility".
Her security detail then exited the site past a few of protesters on the street outside, including one in the costume of a bear wearing a hat.
