2026 Declared the Age of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the definitive year for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a collection of frogs is called an army, it seems they are launching an invasion.

From Classic Icons to Modern Mania

Amphibians have been anything but new to the gaming landscape. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a special place. But, their visibility has markedly increased in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. Although, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are bona fide Frog Games.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To quantify this phenomenon, I performed a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The results reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.

This significant surge prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The creature's rising status in the broader culture is partially evident elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the explosion in gaming seems uniquely powerful.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

Frankly, this is a movement I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess built-in creative potential for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are incredibly easy to be designed as quirky characters that often become a highlight in any game.
  • Unique Gameplay: Their stretchy limbs and sticky tongues facilitate a wide array of unique mechanics.

Several the announced projects clearly utilize these traits. Examples include the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the potential for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

Should these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be witnessing a genuine croaking cultural moment.
